レッスン36：「～ということ」の言い方

こんにちは。戸田です。

今日は、「～ということ」という意味を表す「that」と、「～しなければいけない / ～にちがいない」という意味の「must」の使い方を練習します。

たとえば、

「I think that ～」と言うことで、「私は～と思います。」という意味を表すことができます。

以下に例をあげます。

I think that my boss is very kind.
（私は、私の上司はとても親切だと思います。）

という具合です。

この「that」は、以下のように省略してすることもできます。

I think my boss is very kind.
（私は、私の上司はとても親切だと思います。）

上の例文から分かるように、「I think that ～」の後ろには、主語 + 動詞 の文が続きます。

誰かのことを「親切だと思う」と言いたくても

I think kind.
（親切だと思います。）

のようには言えません。必ず

I think that he is kind.
（彼は親切だと私は思います。）

のように、「that」の後ろに、主語 + 動詞を続けてください。

次に「must」についてお話しします。

「must + 動詞の原形」で「～しなければいけない / ～にちがいない」という意味を表すことができます。

例えば、

I must leave the office now.
（今すぐオフィスを離れなければいけない。）

Chris must be busy.
（クリスは忙しいに違いない。）

という具合です。

■ 英作文の練習

では、以下の日本語を声に出して英語で言ってみましょう。

分からないときは、すぐに英文例を確認してもＯＫです。

1. 私は、私の上司はとても親切だと思います。

2.私は、その出張はわくわくすると思います。

3. 私たちは、あなたの友だちは、大丈夫だと思います。

4.彼らは、その話題は興味深いと思います。

5.私たちは、そのプロジェクトは、とても重要だと思います。

6. 私は、明日は雨だと思います。

7. 私たちは、彼がその話題を理解すると思います。

8. 私は、弟は今日は忙しいと思います。

9. 彼は、彼の考えが良い、と提案しました。

10.私は、明日、病気になりそうな気がします。

11. 私は、この仕事を4時半まで終わらせなければなりません。

12. あなたは、私と来なければなりません。

13.彼は、その会議に来なければなりません。

14.マイコは、英語を勉強しなければなりません。

15.ヒロシは、彼のオフィスを掃除しなければなりません。

1. 私は、私の上司はとても親切だと思います。
I think (that) my boss is very kind.

3. 私たちは、あなたの友だちは、大丈夫だと思います。
We think (that) your friend is OK.

4.彼らは、その話題は興味深いと思います。
They think (that) the topic is interesting.

5.私たちは、そのプロジェクトは、とても重要だと思います。
We think (that) the project is very important.

6. 私は、明日は雨だと思います。
I think (that) it’ll be rainy tomorrow.

7. 私たちは、彼がその話題を理解すると思います。
We think (that) he understands the topic.

8. 私は、弟は今日は忙しいと思います。
I think (that) my brother is busy today.

9. 彼は、彼の考えが良い、と提案しました。
He suggested (that) his idea was good.

10.私は、明日、病気になりそうな気がします。
I feel (that) I’ll be sick tomorrow.

11. 私は、この仕事を4時半まで終わらせなければなりません。
I must finish this task by four thirty.

12. あなたは、私と来なければなりません。
You must come with me.

13.彼は、その会議に来なければなりません。
He must come to the meeting.

14.マイコは、英語を勉強しなければなりません。
Maiko must study English.

15.ヒロシは、彼のオフィスを掃除しなければなりません。
Hiroshi must clean up his office.

16.あなたは、ドアを閉めなければなりません。
You must close the door.

17. 彼は、とても強いに違いありません。
He must be very strong.

18. 彼女は、とても美しいに違いありません。
She must be very beautiful.

19. そのショーは、素晴らしいに違いありません。
The show must be fantastic.

20.あなたは、お腹が空いているに違いありません。
You must be hungry.

I see. Look, I’m thinking about doing some exercise or sport.

■Chris:

I played tennis in the States often, but not anymore.
アメリカにいた時は、よくテニスをしたんだけど、もうしていないし。
I really have to do something.
本当に何かやらなきゃだめなのよ。

■Hiroshi:
Well, I can send you the link to the gym.
じゃあ、ぼくの行っているジムのリンクを送りますね。
They have a lots of exercise machines there.
エクササイズマシンも、たくさんあるんですよ。
Also there is a swimming pool, squash courts, saunas and some yoga classes.
プール、スカッシュコート、サウナ、ヨガ教室なんかもあります。
※正しくは「there are…」です。ネイティブにもこの種の間違いはよくあります。
I think that you will like it.
きっと気に入られると思いますよ。

■Chris:
OK. Thank you very much.
オーケー。ありがとう。
You sound like you are really into sports.
あなたは、とってもスポーツが好きみたいね。
Do you like watching sports, too?
スポーツ観戦も好き？

■Hiroshi:

阪神タイガースの大ファンなんですよ。

It looks like a huge stadium.
すごく大きいスタジアムに見えるけど？

Yes, I have.
はい、ありますよ。
I think that there are about fifty five thousand seats in there.
約55,000席あると思います。
What was the name of the big stadium in your hometown, Los Angeles?
クリスさんの地元のロサンゼルスの大きい球場は、何という名前でしたっけ？

■Chris:
Oh, it’s Dodger Stadium.
ああ、ドジャー・スタジアムね。
I think that there are about fifty six thousand seats there, so it’s about the same size as Tokyo Dome.
56,000席くらいだから、だいたい東京ドームと同じ大きさだわね。
Where is your favorite team’s home stadium?
あなたのお気に入りのチームのホーム・スタジアムはどこなの？

■Hiroshi:
It’s Koshien Stadium in Osaka.
大阪の甲子園です。
It is actually famous for the venue of the National High School Baseball Tournament.
実は、甲子園は、全国甲子園野球大会の会場として、有名なんです。
※正しくは「全国高校野球大会」です。

It’s exciting and moving to watch the tournament.
見ていると、ワクワクして、感動的なんですよ。
There is a custom that when a team loses the game, they take a handful of soil from the stadium for their memory.
試合に負けたチームは、一握りの甲子園の土を思い出に持って帰るのが、習慣なんです。Keep it in your mind to check it out next season.
来シーズン、気をつけて、見てみてくださいよ。

■Chris:
OK. That sounds interesting.
わかったわ。面白いわね。
I’m going to watch the tournament next season, then.
じゃあ、次のシーズンには、見るようにするわね。
Are there any other sports do you recommend watching here?※
他には、ここでおすすめのスポーツ観戦ってあるかしら？

■Hiroshi:
How about sumo?
相撲はどうですか？
Are you interested in sumo?
相撲に興味はありますか？

■Chris:
Yes, I do, but I don’t know much about it.
ええ。でも、あんまり知らないわ。
Where can I watch sumo tournament in Tokyo?
東京では、どこで相撲を見れるの？

■Hiroshi:
Kokugikan in Kuramae.
蔵前の国技館です。
I’m happy to take you there sometime.
いつか、ぼくがお連れしますよ。

※文法的に正しくは「Are there any other sports (that) you recommend watching here?」です。
「do you～」というのはChrisの言い間違いですが、こうした言い間違いは日常会話ではよくあるので、そのまま採用しています。
