レッスン33：「why」を使う疑問文と答え方

今日は、「なぜ～」という意味の「why」を使う疑問文と、「because」を使って答える方法を練習します。

「Why」を使う疑問文は、その後ろに普通の疑問文を続けるだけで作ることができます。

たとえば、

Maiko buys this magazine every month.
（マイコは、毎月、この雑誌を買います。）

を疑問文にすると、

Does Maiko buy this magazine every month?
（マイコは、毎月、この雑誌を買いますか。）

になります。

この疑問文の前に「why」を付けるだけで

Why does Maiko buy this magazine every month?
（マイコはなぜ、毎月、この雑誌を買いますか。）

のように、「なぜ～」の疑問文ができます。

「why」を使う疑問文に返事するには、「なぜなら」という意味の「because」を使って答えます。

Why does Maiko buy this magazine every month?
（マイコはなぜ、毎月、この雑誌を買いますか。）

Because it has her favorite singer’s article.
（なぜなら）彼女の大好きな歌手の記事が載っているからです。

という具合です。

■ 英作文の練習

では、以下の日本語を声に出して英語で言ってみましょう。

分からないときは、すぐに英文例を確認してもＯＫです。

1. なぜあなたは、和食が好きなのですか？
– （なぜなら）とても健康的だからです。

2. なぜマイコは、英語を勉強するのですか？
– （なぜなら）彼女は、留学したいからです。

3. なぜあなたは、この会社で働くのですか？
– （なぜなら）給料がとてもいいからです。

4. なぜあなたは、毎週月曜日、ツタヤに行くのですか？
– （なぜなら）ＤＶＤを借りるのに一番安い日だからです。

5. なぜ彼女は、毎月、この雑誌を買うのですか？
– （なぜなら）彼女の大好きな歌手の記事が載っているからです。

6. なぜあなたは、中国に行ったのですか？
– （なぜなら）仕事の会議があったからです。

7. なぜあなたは、この定食を注文したのですか？
– （なぜなら）メニューの中で一番安かったからです。

8. なぜクリスは、日本に来たのですか？
– （なぜなら）日本文化が好きだったからです。

9. なぜ彼は、仕事を辞めたのですか？
– （なぜなら）彼の上司が嫌いだったからです。

10. なぜケイコは、車を売ったのですか？
– （なぜなら）もう必要なくなったからです。

– Because the pay is pretty good.

4. なぜあなたは、毎週月曜日、ツタヤに行くのですか？

– （なぜなら）ＤＶＤを借りるのに一番安い日だからです。
– Because it’s the cheapest day to rent DVDs.

5. なぜ彼女は、毎月、この雑誌を買うのですか？
Why does she buy this magazine every month?
– （なぜなら）彼女の大好きな歌手の記事が載っているからです。
– Because it has her favorite singer’s article.

6. なぜあなたは、中国に行ったのですか？
Why did you go to China?
– （なぜなら）仕事の会議があったからです。
– Because I had a business meeting.

7. なぜあなたは、この定食を注文したのですか？
Why did you order this set meal?
– （なぜなら）メニューの中で一番安かったからです。
– Because it was the cheapest in the menu.

8. なぜクリスは、日本に来たのですか？
Why did Chris come to Japan?
– （なぜなら）日本文化が好きだったからです。
– Because she liked Japanese culture.

9. なぜ彼は、仕事を辞めたのですか？
Why did he quit his job?
– （なぜなら）彼の上司が嫌いだったからです。
– Because he didn’t like his manager.

Also there is a swimming pool, squash courts, saunas and some yoga classes.
プール、スカッシュコート、サウナ、ヨガ教室なんかもあります。
※正しくは「there are…」です。ネイティブにもこの種の間違いはよくあります。

■Chris:

■Hiroshi:

■Hiroshi:

約55,000席あると思います。

クリスさんの地元のロサンゼルスの大きい球場は、何という名前でしたっけ？

■Chris:
Oh, it’s Dodger Stadium.
ああ、ドジャー・スタジアムね。
I think that there are about fifty six thousand seats there, so it’s about the same size as Tokyo Dome.
56,000席くらいだから、だいたい東京ドームと同じ大きさだわね。
Where is your favorite team’s home stadium?
あなたのお気に入りのチームのホーム・スタジアムはどこなの？

■Hiroshi:
It’s Koshien Stadium in Osaka.
大阪の甲子園です。

※本当は甲子園は兵庫県にあります。ヒロシは勘違いしています。

It is actually famous for the venue of the National High School Baseball Tournament.
実は、甲子園は、全国甲子園野球大会の会場として、有名なんです。
※正しくは「全国高校野球大会」です。

It’s exciting and moving to watch the tournament.
見ていると、ワクワクして、感動的なんですよ。
There is a custom that when a team loses the game, they take a handful of soil from the stadium for their memory.
試合に負けたチームは、一握りの甲子園の土を思い出に持って帰るのが、習慣なんです。Keep it in your mind to check it out next season.
来シーズン、気をつけて、見てみてくださいよ。

■Chris:
OK. That sounds interesting.
わかったわ。面白いわね。
I’m going to watch the tournament next season, then.
じゃあ、次のシーズンには、見るようにするわね。
Are there any other sports do you recommend watching here?※
他には、ここでおすすめのスポーツ観戦ってあるかしら？

■Hiroshi:
How about sumo?
相撲はどうですか？
Are you interested in sumo?
相撲に興味はありますか？

■Chris:
Yes, I do, but I don’t know much about it.
ええ。でも、あんまり知らないわ。

東京では、どこで相撲を見れるの？

■Hiroshi:
Kokugikan in Kuramae.
蔵前の国技館です。
I’m happy to take you there sometime.
いつか、ぼくがお連れしますよ。

※文法的に正しくは「Are there any other sports (that) you recommend watching here?」です。
「do you～」というのはChrisの言い間違いですが、こうした言い間違いは日常会話ではよくあるので、そのまま採用しています。
