レッスン45：「～よりも～」という比較表現

こんにちは。戸田です。

今日は、「～よりも～です。」と「～と同じくらい～です。」という意味の比較表現を練習します。

２つのものや人を比べて、「・・・よりも～です。」と言うときは、「～er than・・・」という表現を使います。

たとえば、クリスとヒロシの身長を比べて

Chris is taller than Hiroshi.
（クリスは、ヒロシより背が高い。）

という具合です。

また、「～er」にあたる単語が長い単語の場合は、「～er」を使う代わりに「more ～ 」を使います。

たとえば、

Baseball is more popular than soccer.
（野球はサッカーより人気がある。）

という具合です。

また、「～er」も「more ～」も使わない例外表現もあります。

good – better – best
(良い)(より良い)(一番良い)

bad – worse – worst
(悪い)(より悪い)(一番悪い)

などです。

以下に例をあげます。

Chris speaks English better than Hiroshi.
（クリスは、ヒロシより上手に英語を話します。）

という具合です。

また、２つのものや人を比べて、「・・・と同じくらい～です。」と言うときは、「as～as・・・」という表現を使います。

たとえば、ヒロシとマイクの身長を比べて

Hiroshi is as tall as Mike.
（ヒロシは、マイクと同じくらい背が高い。）

と言うことができます。

■ 英作文の練習

では、以下の日本語を声に出して英語で言ってみましょう。

分からないときは、すぐに英文例を確認してもＯＫです。

1.東京スカイツリーは、東京タワーより高いです。

2.私の父は、私の母より年上です。

3. 私の学校では、サッカーは、野球より人気があります。

4.チキンバーガーは、ハンバーガーより高いです。

5.あなたの髪は、わたしのより短いです。

6. あなたは、いつも私より上手に、その報告書を書きます。

7. その俳優は、その歌手より有名です。

8. ヒロシは、ケイコより早く歩きます。

9. 私は、以前より、幸せに感じます。

10.あなたの靴は、私のと同じくらいの大きさです。

11. あなたは、私より重くないです。

12. この会議は、昨日の会議より長引きません。

13. 私は、あなたより早くタイプできません。

14. ケイコは、マイコより背が高くありません。

15. この人形は、あなたのほど可愛らしくありません。

16.東京タワーは、通天閣より高いですか？
はい、高いです。

17. あなたは、チキンとビーフ、どちらの方が好きですか？
私は、ビーフよりチキンの方が好きです。

18. あなたは、前回よりも上手くできますか？
はい、できます。次回は、もっとがんばります。

19.あなたは、昨日より気分がいいですか？
はい。昨日よりずっと気分がいいです。

20.その本は、これと同じくらい面白いですか？
はい、あなたは、大好きだと思いますよ。

■ 英作文の練習（英文例）

1.東京スカイツリーは、東京タワーより高いです。
Tokyo Sky Tree is taller than Tokyo Tower.

2.私の父は、私の母より年上です。
My father is older than my mother.

3. 私の学校では、サッカーは、野球より人気があります。
Soccer is more popular than baseball in my school.

4.チキンバーガーは、ハンバーガーより高いです。
The chicken burger is more expensive than the hamburger.

5.あなたの髪は、わたしのより短いです。
Your hair is shorter than mine.

6. あなたは、いつも私より上手に、その報告書を書きます。
You always write the report better than I do.

7. その俳優は、その歌手より有名です。
The actor is more famous than the singer.

8. ヒロシは、ケイコより早く歩きます。
Hiroshi walks faster than Keiko.

9. 私は、以前より、幸せに感じます。
I feel happier than before.

10.あなたの靴は、私のと同じくらいの大きさです。
Your shoes are as big as mine.

11. あなたは、私より重くないです。
You are not heavier than me.

12. この会議は、昨日の会議より長引きません。
This meeting is not longer than yesterday’s.

13. 私は、あなたより早くタイプできません。
I can’t type faster than you.

14. ケイコは、マイコより背が高くありません。
Keiko isn’t taller than Maiko.

15. この人形は、あなたのほど可愛らしくありません。
This doll is not as pretty as yours.

16.東京タワーは、通天閣より高いですか？
Is Tokyo Tower taller than Tsutenkaku?
はい、高いです。
Yes, it is.

17. あなたは、チキンとビーフ、どちらの方が好きですか？
Which do you like better, chicken or beef?
私は、ビーフよりチキンの方が好きです。
I like chicken better than beef.

18. あなたは、前回よりも上手くできますか？
Can you do better than the last time?
はい、できます。次回は、もっとがんばります。
Yes, I can. I will try harder next time.

19.あなたは、昨日より気分がいいですか？
Do you feel better than yesterday?
はい。昨日よりずっと気分がいいです。
Yes, I do. I feel much better than yesterday.

20.その本は、これと同じくらい面白いですか？
Is this book as interesting as this one?
はい、あなたは、大好きだと思いますよ。
Yes, it is. You’ll love it.

Japanese sweets are popular from young to senior people here.
和菓子は、若い人から年配の人まで、好まれています。
They also go with coffee and our current menu “Green tea beverages”.
それに、コーヒーにも合うし、現メニューの「抹茶ドリンク類」にもぴったりです。
Our customers will have a choice between western sweets like cakes and muffins, and Japanese sweets.
お客様は、洋風のケーキやマフィンと、和菓子の選択を持つことができるわけです。
I think that it’s a great idea to get more customers to our stores.
我が社の顧客拡大に、とてもいい案だと思います。

■Mike:
OK. I understand.
なるほど。わかった。
You gave us some sample photos of the Japanese sweets.
君は、我々に、和菓子の見本写真を何点か送ってくれたね。
They look really nice.
本当においしそうに見えるよ。
You said that there are ways to sell those sweets efficiently.
君は、和菓子の効果的な販売戦略もある、と言っていたけど？
May I ask you about that?
それについて聞いてもいいかな？

■Hiroshi:
Yes. Japanese people like limited-time products.
はい。日本人は、季節限定商品が好きなんですよ。
Special seasonal products are more popular than all year around ones.
季節限定商品は、通常商品より、人気があります。
So, it’s good to change the Japanese sweets menu every month according to the season.
なので、季節によって、毎月和菓子のメニューを変えていくといいですね。
In that way, we’ll get more attention from people.
そうすると、もっと一般大衆の目を引きますよ。
I think that lots of repeaters will come to taste the different sweets every month.
多くのリピーターが、月替わりの和菓子を食べに、毎月来ると思います。
I think this will make a big difference.
これで、大きな違いが出ると思います。

■Mike:
I see.

You know, we can apply that seasonal marketing technique to our cakes and muffins, too.
あのさ、その季節限定商品のマーケティング戦略って、我が社のケーキやマフィンでもできるわけだよね。

Do you think having Japanese sweets is still important?
和菓子をやる重要性ってあるのかな？

■Hiroshi:
Yes, I do.
はい、あるんです。
Lots of people have food allergies these days.
最近、アレルギー体質の方々が多いんですよ。

Nuts, eggs, dairy products, flour are the most common allergen.
ナッツ、卵、乳製品、小麦粉などが一番のアレルギー源なんです。
Those are often used in cakes, muffins and cookies.
それらは、よくケーキやマフィンやクッキーなどに使われていますよね。
On the other hand, most of Japanese sweets don’t use them.
でも、ほとんどの和菓子は、それらを使わないのです。
They are mainly made of rice, beans and sugar.
和菓子の主要材料は、米、豆、砂糖です。
Customers with food allergies still can have a chance to eat something sweets at our coffee shops.
アレルギーをお持ちのお客様にも、我が社のお店で、何か甘いものを食べていただくことができるのです。

■Mike:
That’s true.
そうだねえ。
Well, I was very impressed with your proposal.
うん、君の提案には、とても感服したよ。
I think we’ll seriously think about this plan.
真剣に案を詰めていこうと思っているよ。
I’m going to Tokyo next month to see some of our stores and have a sales meeting.
来月、店舗視察と営業会議で東京に行くんだ。
May I ask you to prepare for a more detailed presentation about this project?
この案件について、さらに詳しいプレゼンテーションを準備しておいてくれるかな？

■Hiroshi:
Sure. I’m very excited.

■Mike:

ぼくもだよ。
I’m really looking forward to seeing you next month in Tokyo.
来月、東京で君と会うのを楽しみにしているよ。
I will stay there for two weeks.
ぼくは、東京には2週間滞在する予定なんだ。
We can get together and talk about this plan in details.
一緒にこの案件について、細部まで話を詰められるね。

■Hiroshi:
OK. Well, I will be at the airport to pick you up when you come.
はい。あの、マイクさんがいらっしゃる時、空港にお迎えにあがります。
May I ask your schedule?
スケジュールをお聞きしてもいいですか？

■Mike:
Let me see…I will arrive at Narita airport at three o’clock on the 10th next month.
ええと…来月10日にの3時に成田空港に着くよ。

■Hiroshi:
OK. I will be waiting for you at the arrival area.
わかりました。では、到着エリアで、お待ちしております。

■Mike:
Thank you. I’ll send you my itinerary later.
ありがとう。後で、旅程表を送るよ。
